We are excited to welcome Mrs. Julie Brewster as the new Reading Coach at Iva Elementary! ๐ฅณ

We wrapped up our reading of Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech with our 1 Book 1 School celebration on Friday! Students enjoyed a petting zoo, book shopping, crafts, STEM activities, games, and more. Thank you to our students, families, and faculty members for reading along, and thank you to all community members who donated your time on Friday! A special shout out to Mrs. Harbert, our reading coach, for planning this awesome event for our students! Another special shout out to Mrs. Sherman, a first grade teacher here at IES, for donating over 3,000 books for our students to take home!

Mrs. Stephanie Harbert, the Reading Coach at Iva Elementary, has been instrumental in implementing LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) at Iva through the South Carolina Department of Educationโs Science of Reading initiative.
As seen here, Mrs. Harbert is completing a Blending Drill using blending boards. In this activity, the students are given words following a pattern. Once they hear the words and โcatchโ them, they articulate them and โthrowโ them back to Mrs. Harbert. They then use letter tiles to spell the words.
Blending drills are powerful tools in reading instruction that leverage key principles from the science of reading. These activities help students develop essential skills like phonemic awareness, phonics knowledge, and fluency. ๐ค๐๐ #A3Teaches #ScieneceofReading #scienceofreadingweek

What's even better than reading great books? Celebrating with a shopping trip to Barnes & Noble and lunch at Chick-Fil-A, of course! These 4th and 5th graders completed the A3 Reading Challenge and finished 20 chapter books this school year!

Third-graders tested out forces and motion with some help from our friends at Roper Mountain Science Center!

March Madness takes on a whole new meaning in K5! Mrs. Sudduth's kindergarten students enjoyed books read aloud by guest readers and then voted on their favorites!
